Hell Bent on Hirakiri

A couple of days ago , I was travelling back to our office in a colleagues car .The driver was driving at a fair speed as he approached a cross road and from his left was another car , incidently a brand new one , speeding towards the same cross road .The two were intent only on their own perceived right of way and unmindful of potential loss of life , serious damage to the cars  and even endangering the lives of bystanders, the cars hurtled towards each other and crashed into each other almost as if ordained .I was in the rear seat on the side of the on rushing car and felt the brunt of the impact as our car spun around .Thankfully none of us was injured only the two cars took substantial damage .

What was it that made these two drivers soo unmindful of their own lives and damage to their cars ?? For starters , I guess their animal instincts took over as they claimed right of way .Their respective egos  blinding them from rational thought .Or was it that their own lives and possessions meant so little to them . Respect for life and property has got to be of paramount concern .One was a driver standing at a relatively modest rung of the social ladder , the other was a reasonably senior officer at relatively higher rung of the same ladder .He at least should have displayed better civic responsibility and care in allowing the other car to whizz past the cross roads first .In any case he had to ,by obligation ,as the acknowledged right of way at a cross road is for the vehical approaching from the right . So sad that even so well placed an individual should have such little control over his ego and animal instinct .Nobody , I suppose , told the driver of the Car I was in , that it must always be his responsibily to take his passengers safely to their destination , irrespective of the passengers stature or perceived social standing . I would have thought his concern and care should have been all the more so ,since I was the passenger !!

We dont often realise how much damage our respective egos do to us . I have come to realise that even high stress levels are induced at least partially by the need for recognition and the fear of failure . It seems so simple to conclude ,that all it requires is for each of us to stay focused on what value we can and are adding rather than the situation we find ourselves in . Prayer and meditation do develope a strong inner core that allows these simple truths to be the guiding principles of our lives.  I did reflect that this accident could have been a providential warning to me to rebuild on the good fortune I may have accumulated through several decades of humble prayers .Happily I am back to my regular prayer routine and have resolved to keep at it cheerfully and joyfully .
