Copenhagen

Our first experience of Copenhagen was disappointing. The station was much more dirty than we expected and we just couldnt see the efficiency we saw in Stockholm. One of the reasons could be that we reached alot later in the night .We did how ever get directions on how to get to the Sandic Hotel by a local train and with some help at the statoin were able to walk to the hotewl and check in smoothly. The hotel itself was more than comfortable and we decided to have a buffet dinner and a glass each of Chilian red wine at the Hotel itself. The dinner and wine made for a pleasant and cozy evening.
Earlier in the evening we reached Malmo station on the dot and as luch would have it the connecting train was on the adjacent platform and leaving in approx 5 minutes .Over all our experience in Stockholm was quite outstanding in every respect.
The following morning after a fairly sumptious buffet breakfast at the Hotel we set off for the City Centre and made our way to the Tourist Information Centre to get our bearings right. We did decide not to buy a travel card as we were not going to make many trips by train or bus.We were way ahead of time for the City & Harbour guided tour so we spent time lounging around at the City Square as were several other tourists.A beautiful church at the square had a busy morning as 3 to 4 weddings took place in the hour or so that we had spent there. The Town Hall square is the largest in Copenhagen and the place were Danes express joy or indignation over various issues .Over 100,000 people had gatherted here to celebrate the liberation from German occupation in May 1945.
The weather was cool and pleasant and we were soon to know how fickle the Copenhagen weather could be .In the morning was we were about to set off from the hotel it started to drizzle and it got very windy , so we took along light woolens. In the while the drizzle stopped and it was sunny and bright again. The same thing happened as we alighted from the guided tour of the harbour and as we were having lunch. The drizzle however stopped after a while and there after we had pleasant sunny weather for the rest of the day.
The tour through the city in the buss with audio commentary through ear plugs was a huge disappointment .Thestaff in the buss were very casual and lacking in enthusiaism and the entire commentary was more often than not out of sync with the actual position of the bus on the road. The tour of the harbour on the motor boat was much better and more than made up for the poor bus ride .The energetic tour guide on the boat spoke in three languages and had a cheerful disposition which makes a lot of difference to the tour experience. We got to see several impotant monuments along the way such as the Opera House and the Royal Library , called the Black Diamond. The boat ride took us through the interesting Christianshavn area.
Of the sights we saw on the bus ride and on walking halts was the Gefion Stature and the St Albans church .This was a beautiful place and we would have loved to come back and spend some time here .But couldnt make it later in the day.The little mermaid seemed far too hyped up nevertheless we rushed in and took pictures like all the other tourists. We spent quality time at The National Museum and got to see a fantastic display of tools & weaponry through the ages from the earliest flint stone days. Most of the artifacts on display seem to have been excavated from  graves or borg sites .It was extraordinary collection pains takeningly put together and displayed. We tried to go to the Marble church but were too late as had closed when we got there .
We spent most of the afternoon the way most of the tourist do ,sitting around outside pubs and eating joints drinking beer or wine and eating .We had lunch of club sandwitches and coffee with hot milk at a nice eating place near the alighting point of the boat ride .We also spent time walking around in the busy Stroget area. This is Copenhagens premiur shopping street .It’s a pedestrian only street and had several street side entertainers an musicians .We picked up  a double scoop of ice cream each as we walked along and also stopped from time to time for a refreshing drinks , beer for me and soft drinks for Deepa.Hot grilled sandwitches with cheese and ham filling was how we closed a pleasant and relaxed afternoon.
Back in the Hotel at 9.00 pm we showered .. relaxed awhile , then packed our baxes for the final journey back home .This  outstanding holiday was then all over bar the shouting as they say.
